"I like you for all the obvious reasons, but I cant see past that. I want to like you for who you really are and not for who you obviously are."

In case you didn't know, I'm working at a conference center, and the "Big People up Top" (Headquarters) have decided that we should take in some of the refugees" from "Down South" (probably the big N-O). Most of the people that I eat lunch with (who are here to volunteer) are completely supportive of housing those in their time of need, but at the same time, they all seem to agree on one thing: the need to "screen" those who will be coming here. (You probably already know that many of the New Orleans areas were "ghetto, project areas," full of drugs and prostitution.)
What is causing me second thought on the issue of screening, is that these people seem so concerned with keeping the bad people out -- but aren't those the people who need help the most? Not just for material needs of shelter, but for spiritual as well? (This is, of course, not to say that the "good, Christian people" should be left out either.) Didn't Jesus go to the house of Zaccheus (the wee little man in the tree.... you know who I mean), the greedy and crooked tax-collector? And didn't Zaccheus change his ways? Aren't we, as Christians, supposed to help everyone who needs it, not just those who are Christian and need help? I understand that we can't throw caution or reason to the wind in matters like this, but why not help the "bad people" too?

There are only so many "good" people in the world, and I only no a few of them; that's a shame. Of these "good" people that I know, there are two main kinds (that I can think of right now):
          1) The ones who are nice, decent people
          2) The ones who don't always have the right thing to say, but they always spare the time and energy to worry about you and to make an extra trip to check on you and make sure that everything is okay.

I am very fortunate  to know even ONE of the second kind of "good" people -- and I thank God almost every day for bringing her into my life. This lady is my boyfriend's mommy, and I love her very much. (She loves me too -- she told me so. *Gold star!* ) Unfortunattely, sometimes she has troubles too, just like everyone else in the world. Unlike everyone else in the world though, she would give me everything she has to help me out, if I needed it -- and right now, I wish I had something that I could do for her to help her out.

Take the time to find someone in your life who is like this, and thank them for everything they have done, do, and would do for you.
